Egypt rewards those willing to endure Cairo's chaos and Nile-side bureaucracy. The pharaonic sites—Giza, Luxor, the Valley of the Kings—are genuinely staggering, though crowds and persistent hawkers can numb the experience. Most travellers spend 2–3 weeks chasing temples and tombs along the river, then either head to Red Sea resorts for reef diving or push south to Aswan.
Visit during winter months (Nov–Feb) when heat is manageable. Summer brings temperatures above 40°C and thinner tourist crowds, but expect exhaustion. The Nile itself is less dramatic than myth suggests—dams and irrigation have tamed it—but the landscape either side remains harsh, hypnotic desert.
Security has improved significantly, though travel advisories remain cautious for certain regions (Sinai, Western Desert). Stick to main tourist routes and use common sense. Negotiation is baked into the culture; treat it as sport, not stress.
Highlights
- Giza & Cairo — Pyramids and the Great Sphinx dominate, though crowds are relentless. The Egyptian Museum holds treasures. Cairo itself is loud, polluted, chaotic—essential but exhausting.
- Luxor — Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings. The east bank heaves with tour groups; the west bank quieter. Best base for pharaonic sightseeing.
- Valley of the Kings — Painted tombs carved into rock. Hyperion, Tutankhamun, Ramesses. Most are stunning inside; expect tight, hot passages and modest entry fees per tomb.
- Red Sea Diving & Snorkelling — Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh offer reliable coral reefs and marine life. Equipment rental widely available. Can feel touristy but genuinely good underwater.
- Aswan & Abu Simbel — Smaller, cleaner than Luxor. Abu Simbel's colossal rock temples lie south, visited by tour or speedboat. Less crowded than northern sites.
- Nile River Journeys — Felucca sailing and cruise boats run Cairo–Aswan. Slower felucca offers authentic pace; cruises more comfortable. Spectacular at sunset.
