Germany delivers without the pretence. You get efficient transport, walkable city centres, and locals who'd rather you didn't overthink things. Berlin's got the history and nightlife; Munich trades on beer gardens and proximity to the Alps. The real draw is the in-between: medieval towns, serious forests, and a food scene that doesn't need Instagram.

Wallets go further here than Western Europe suggests. A decent meal costs what you'd expect, and camping or hostels get you comfortable beds cheaply. The language barrier exists but shrinks fast—most people under 40 speak English, and Germans appreciate effort over fluency.

Rail networks run on time enough that locals get annoyed if they're five minutes late. Seasons matter: winter is dark and cold but manageable; summer brings crowds and beer festivals. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot—weather's reasonable and you won't queue for three hours at a castle.

Highlights

  1. BerlinPost-war history, street art, techno clubs, and cafés that don't shut until breakfast.
  2. Black Forest & Harz MountainsDense forests, small towns, hiking trails, and genuinely quiet air if you walk two hours from anything.
  3. Bavarian Castles & Alpine FoothillsNeuschwanstein and dozens of others perched on ridges. Accessible on foot or train from Munich.
  4. Beer Gardens & Oktoberfest CultureTheresienwiese in Munich, but dozens of smaller towns do the same thing without the October crowds.
  5. Rhine Valley & Wine TownsSteep vineyards, half-timbered villages, and boat trips between towns. Steeply picturesque, less touristy than Switzerland.
  6. Industrial Heritage & Modern CitiesFormer coal regions now museums and parks. Leipzig, Frankfurt, and others show post-reunification transformation plainly.

Everything you need to know

When should I go?+
May–June and September–October avoid peak summer crowds and December's Christmas market chaos. Winter's grim but works if you like empty castles and skiing near Bavaria. Oktoberfest (September) in Munich is rammed; smaller towns run parallel festivals without the tourist gauntlet.
Do I need a visa?+
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: no. UK citizens get 90 days visa-free. Most other nationalities need advance Schengen visas. Check your passport validity (six months minimum recommended).
How much per day?+
€25–35 backpacking (hostels, street food, free museums). €60–90 mid-range (decent hotels, restaurant meals). €150+ comfortable (better hotels, beer gardens, attractions). Prices higher in Munich and Berlin.
Is it safe?+
Very. Petty theft exists in major cities and on trains; keep valuables close. Hate crimes against visible minorities happen—research your specific city. Healthcare is excellent and costs are reasonable even without insurance.
What should I pack?+
Waterproof jacket (it rains). Proper hiking boots if you're doing forests. Plug adaptor (Type C & F, 230V/50Hz). Germans dress down—no need for fancy stuff. Winter months need thermal layers and a decent coat.
