Charles Bridge is one of those places that genuinely earns its reputation. Stretching 516 metres across the Vltava River and lined with 30 Baroque statues of saints, the bridge connects the Old Town to Malá Strana and has been doing so since the 15th century.

Walking across it, you get a sense of just how much history has passed over these cobblestones — merchants, kings, armies, and now millions of tourists every year.

The atmosphere depends almost entirely on when you arrive. Come at midday in July and you'll be shuffling shoulder-to-shoulder through a gauntlet of souvenir sellers and portrait artists, which makes it difficult to appreciate the stonework or the sweeping views over the river. Come at dawn — and I mean actual dawn, around 5 or 6am in summer — and the bridge is almost empty, softly lit, and genuinely beautiful.

The statues cast long shadows, the castle looms above in the mist, and you can actually stop and look at things. It's a completely different experience.

The bridge is free to walk across at any hour, which makes the early morning visit easy to plan. The closest metro station is Staroměstská on Line A, and from there it's a five-minute walk. Comfortable shoes matter here — the cobblestones are uneven and slippery when wet, which in Prague is fairly often.

Watch your pockets in crowded conditions; pickpocketing is a known issue on the bridge, particularly in peak season.

The statues are replicas; the originals are housed in the Lapidarium museum if you want to see them up close. For the most rewarding visit, go early on a weekday and bring a light layer — the river breeze is cooler than you'd expect.
