One of Southeast Asia's oldest functioning zoos, Saigon Zoo & Botanical Gardens has been operating since 1865 — predating Vietnamese independence by the better part of a century.

It sits on 33 hectares in District 1, just a short walk or xe ôm ride from the Museum of Vietnamese History, and the combination of colonial-era botanical plantings with animal enclosures gives the place an unusual, slightly melancholy atmosphere that is genuinely hard to find anywhere else in the region.

The botanical garden sections are the most rewarding. Mature rain trees and towering tropical species create real shade corridors, which you will be grateful for given the heat. Among the animals, the sun bears are the standout — compact, curious, and active in the cooler morning hours in ways that bigger bears rarely are.

The gaurs, massive wild cattle native to Southeast Asian forests, tend to draw less attention than they deserve. The primate collection is large, though honestly several of the older enclosures here are cramped by contemporary standards, and if animal welfare matters to your travel decisions, it is fair to say this zoo leans more historical than conservation-forward.

There are no significant published in-situ breeding programmes comparable to what you would find at Singapore Zoo or Taronga.

Allow three to four hours rather than a full day. Pushchairs manage reasonably well on the main paths but struggle on older sections near the back enclosures. Entry fees are modest — well under 100,000 VND for adults at time of writing — and the gardens alone justify the price.

Arrive before 8:30 in the morning on weekdays to avoid school groups and to catch the sun bears and primates at their most active.
