About this tour
When Lily from our team ran this private tour, we got exactly what we came for: a proper Great Wall experience minus the tour-bus crowds. You spend your morning and early afternoon on Jinshanling, wandering between watchtowers and taking in uncluttered mountain views, then shift gears as the sun drops. The evening pivots to Simatai's lit-up night section and the lantern-strung lanes of Gubei Water Town nearby—a quieter side of Beijing's Wall tourism. The whole thing stretches 10–12 hours with a private guide, your own vehicle, and meals sorted. It's genuinely peaceful where it counts.

What to expect
The day starts with a pickup from your Beijing hotel, then a drive out to Jinshanling. You'll spend the first 3–4 hours hiking between watchtowers and soaking in views; the trails are moderate and well-trodden, so it's not gruelling, but you'll feel your legs. The air is fresher out here, and without hordes of other visitors, you can actually stand and breathe. Lunch or dinner lands mid-afternoon depending on what you've chosen.
After eating, you'll head to Gubei Water Town—it's a reconstructed riverside village with shops and cafes, not a "real" place, but the lantern-lit effect in the growing dusk is genuinely striking. Then you're on the cable car at Simatai, watching the Wall curve away beneath you lit by soft lights. It's intimate and quietly brilliant. The whole thing wraps late evening when you're driven back to your hotel.
Good to know
This is one of the few ways to see the Wall at night without the circus of a massive group tour. Jinshanling is legitimately less crowded than Badaling, and Simatai after dark is a standout memory. The private setup means your guide can slow down or speed up to match your pace, and you've got the flexibility to linger where you like. All entrance fees and the Simatai cable car are included, so no surprises at gates. Vegetarian meals are available if you flag it upfront.
This tour is physically demanding—10–12 hours is a full day, and the Jinshanling hiking requires decent fitness. It's not recommended if you have cardiovascular concerns. You'll be walking trails in full daylight (bring sun protection and sturdy shoes) then standing around in cooling evening air. The cable car at Jinshanling costs extra if you want it. Gubei Water Town itself is a tourist construct, so manage expectations there. Peak seasons will still have decent numbers of visitors, just fewer than flagship sites. Gratuities aren't included, so budget for your guide.
