About this tour
When Alex from our team ran this Northern Lights tour in Tromsø, we piled into a Mercedes minibus with up to 18 other seekers and headed into the Arctic night with a local guide and driver who know where to chase clear skies. Over 4 to 8 hours, you're chasing the aurora across the coast, valleys, and sometimes over into Finland—the route shifts based on cloud cover and conditions. Your guide photographs you beneath the lights (if they show), walks you through the aurora science, and keeps you warm with hot drinks, snacks, and cake. The whole thing hinges on nature cooperating, and that's the honest bit: sightings aren't guaranteed.

What to expect
You'll meet your guide and driver, get kitted out in a thermal suit if you want one, then spend the evening driving. The pace is patient—stops at high vantage points where you wait, watch, and listen. If clouds roll in, you move. The driver knows the roads and the guide reads the sky. When the lights do show, it's unscripted: sometimes a soft glow, sometimes wild curtains. Your guide will have you pose for shots, then chat through what you're seeing and why it happens. Hot drinks and cake appear at stops. Between sightings there's downtime—the waiting is real, but the company and commentary help pass it. Depending on conditions, you might be out the full 8 hours or done in 4. It's not a guaranteed show, so manage expectations on that front.
Good to know
This tour earns its keep if you actually see the aurora—the professional photos are a genuine bonus, the small group keeps it intimate, and a guide who knows the region can dodge clouds better than most. Suits you if you're keen on the science, prefer a slower pace, and want someone else driving in Arctic conditions. The thermal suits help, though you'll need to bring your own heavy coat, hat, gloves, and insulated boots—the suit isn't a full solution. Hot drinks and snacks are a nice touch on long nights.
Aurora sightings aren't guaranteed, and there's no refund if you see nothing. It's a long sit in the dark and cold, so patience is essential. You need a valid passport in case you cross into Finland. Restroom stops are limited (1–2 depending on route), and in remote areas you might need to pee outdoors. Not for kids under 12, pregnant travellers, or anyone with heart or spinal issues. Alcohol isn't allowed, and the driver will refuse entry to anyone visibly drunk. You're responsible for your own warm layer beyond the thermal suit. Tripods aren't included.
