Limestone cliffs, island-hopping and Adriatic wine without the crowds

Croatia's got the postcards everyone knows—Game of Thrones filming locations, walled towns, turquoise water—but what makes it worth the trip is the space between them. The Dalmatian coast is genuinely stunning, and unlike Greece or southern Spain, you can still find quiet anchorages and local restaurants where they're not charging peak-season markup.
The interior is where most tourists skip. Lake systems like Plitvice offer proper hiking and waterfall swims, and the cycling routes between Dalmatian valleys actually deliver on the "unspoilt" promise. Zagreb is a real city with decent nightlife and galleries, not a heritage museum pretending to be one.
Timing matters. July–August is hot, pricey and heaving. Spring and autumn give you decent weather, half the tourist load, and lower accommodation costs. Winter is quiet but grey.
