Moldova sits wedged between Romania and Ukraine, overlooked by most travellers heading to bigger names. That's partly the point—you'll find genuine guesthouses, unpretentious wine cellars, and locals keen to chat rather than hustle you. The capital sprawls without much charm, but venture into the countryside and you'll hit rolling vineyards, monasteries carved into cliffsides, and Soviet relics that feel less polished than elsewhere.
The wine is legitimately good and cheap. Serious producers operate alongside family operations that'll pour you homemade stuff at lunch for a handful of lei. Combine that with low prices, decent public transport, and a surprising lack of tourist infrastructure, and you've got a country that rewards curiosity over planning.
Language is a minor friction—Romanian and Russian are most useful—but English appears in tourist zones. Border crossings with Ukraine require attention, and the breakaway Transnistria region complicates the eastern half. Worth knowing before you book.
