Medieval castles, mountain passes, and the Danube's wild edge
50 live tours · 7 places · 7 cities
Romania sits at Europe's edge—literally and culturally. You get the Carpathian range cutting through the middle, Transylvania's forests and fortified villages, and the Danube Delta sprawling into the Black Sea. It's less visited than it should be, which means fewer queues and cheaper rates than similar terrain elsewhere.
The cycling routes here are proper adventures: high mountain passes, long ridge rides, and gravel tracks through villages that haven't changed much in decades. Bran Castle exists (yes, the Dracula one), but the real draw is the landscape—and the fact that you can ride or hike for hours without seeing another tourist.
Budget travel works here. Guesthouses, street food, and local wine are all genuinely affordable. The infrastructure is uneven—some roads are excellent, others rough—but that's part of the appeal if you're self-sufficient.
