Angeles National Forest stretches across nearly 700,000 acres of the San Gabriel Mountains, sitting improbably close to the sprawl of Los Angeles. On a clear morning, you can be hiking through chaparral and pine forest within an hour of downtown, with the city a distant smudge far below.

That proximity is both its greatest appeal and its most honest caveat — on weekends, popular trailheads fill fast and the access roads can back up considerably.

The landscape shifts as you gain elevation. Lower slopes are dense with scrub oak and manzanita, while higher reaches above 2,000 metres open into ponderosa pine and white fir.

The trails vary enormously in character: the Gabrielino Trail follows the West Fork of the San Gabriel River through a surprisingly green canyon, while the Mount Baldy area offers exposed ridgeline walking with sweeping views across the basin and, on lucky winter days, genuine snow underfoot.

Wildlife is more abundant than many visitors expect — black bear, mule deer, and golden eagles are all real possibilities, particularly if you're out early.

Unlike neighbouring Joshua Tree or Sequoia, Angeles feels more like a working, lived-in forest — fire roads, equestrian trails, and campgrounds coexist with remote wilderness. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking at most day-use areas, currently around $5 for a day permit, available from ranger stations in Arcadia or Chilao.

Most trailheads are accessible by car from the 210 freeway, though some upper routes close seasonally due to snow or fire damage, so checking the forest service website before you go is genuinely worth the five minutes.

Aim for late spring or autumn when temperatures are comfortable and the risk of trail closures from summer fire restrictions is lower — bring plenty of water regardless of the season.
