The Los Angeles Zoo sits at the northern end of Griffith Park, a short drive or rideshare from Los Feliz, and feels surprisingly spacious once you're inside — 48 hectares of rolling terrain that will absolutely test your legs on a warm California afternoon.

Plan on a full day rather than a half; the hills between exhibits are steeper than the map suggests, and shade is patchy outside the wooded gorilla area.

The Campo Gorilla Reserve is the clear emotional centrepiece, a thoughtfully landscaped habitat where you can watch the troop interact at close range through wide viewing panels. Spend time here early before the crowds build around midmorning. The elephant section draws reliable queues, particularly when keepers are active with enrichment, and the giraffe feeding platform gives kids a proper eye-level encounter that tends to sell itself.

LAIR — the Living Amphibians, Invertebrates and Reptiles building — is one of the more distinctive exhibits on the West Coast, housing Komodo dragons, Guatemalan palm-pitvipers, and a decent collection of critically endangered amphibians as part of active conservation breeding work. It's cool, dim, and worth every minute.

The zoo participates in Species Survival Plans for California condors and has had genuine success with condor egg-hatching programmes that have contributed birds to the wild population — not a trivial thing given where those birds were twenty years ago.

Parking is available directly at the Griffith Park lot off Zoo Drive, and the DASH bus connects from the Metro Red Line at Vermont/Sunset. Pushchairs handle the main paths well but struggle on the steeper connector routes.

Arrive at opening time (10am) on weekdays, wear comfortable shoes with grip, and bring water — afternoon heat in summer is no joke.
