Golden Gate Bridge

Few structures in the world carry quite the same emotional weight as the Golden Gate Bridge. Standing at the southern end in the Presidio, looking up at those burnt-orange towers disappearing into a rolling blanket of fog, it is genuinely difficult not to feel something. The bridge stretches nearly 2.

7 kilometres across the mouth of San Francisco Bay, connecting the city to Marin County, and the scale of it only really hits you once you are standing beneath it or walking across it.

The pedestrian path along the eastern side is free to access and open daily, running the full length of the bridge — roughly a 30 to 45 minute walk each way. It is not a casual stroll in strong wind, and the exposed deck can be bitterly cold even in summer, so bring more layers than you think you need.

The views across the bay toward Alcatraz, the city skyline, and the Marin Headlands on the north side are spectacular. Cyclists have their own designated lane on the western side.

For viewpoints, Battery Spencer in the Marin Headlands gives you the classic elevated angle that most people associate with the bridge in photographs — it is worth the short drive or hike after crossing. Closer in, Fort Point sits directly beneath the southern tower and offers a dramatically different, almost overwhelming perspective looking straight up at the structure.

Getting here without a car is straightforward via the 28 or 29 bus routes from the city, or the GGT ferry from the Ferry Building if you want to approach by water. Parking is available at the Roundhouse lot near the visitor centre but fills early on weekends. Visit on a weekday morning in spring or autumn for the best light and manageable crowds.
