Standing at the base of the General Sherman Tree and craning your neck skyward is one of those genuinely humbling moments that travel occasionally delivers. This is the largest living tree on Earth by volume, and no photograph really prepares you for the sheer column of reddish-brown bark rising more than 84 metres into the forest canopy.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon together form a single managed unit, yet they feel quite distinct — Sequoia is quieter and more centred on the groves, while Kings Canyon opens dramatically into one of the deepest river gorges in North America, carved by the Kings River far below Road's End.

The landscape shifts constantly as you move through the parks. Dense sequoia groves give way to granite meadows, subalpine ridgelines, and eventually the raw canyon walls dropping hundreds of metres. Black bears are genuinely common here, more so than in many neighbouring parks, and you are required to use bear canisters or the food-storage boxes provided at campsites.

Mule deer wander through the groves with barely a glance at passing walkers, and in the higher reaches you may spot marmots on the rocky outcrops.

The gateway town of Visalia sits roughly an hour west of the Ash Mountain entrance, and there is a seasonal shuttle service that removes some of the pressure of driving the narrow, winding Generals Highway yourself. The park charges a standard vehicle entry fee, currently around $35 USD, valid for seven days across both parks.

Late May through September offers the most accessible conditions, though July and August bring significant crowds to the Giant Forest area; if you can visit mid-week in June, you will have the groves in relative peace.
