Phuket Old Town is the part of the island most visitors skip — and the better for those who don't. Centred on Thalang Road, it's a few blocks of beautifully restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses painted in bright pastels, now home to small cafés, art galleries, indie boutiques, and some genuinely good restaurants.
The architecture is the legacy of Phuket's tin-mining boom in the late 1800s, when Chinese merchants and European traders built homes that mixed both styles. Wander down the side lanes and you'll find Chinese shrines, old Sikh temples, and the kind of layered street life that the resort beaches don't offer.
The Sunday Walking Street market on Thalang Road is the best time to visit — closed traffic, food stalls, live music, and a relaxed local crowd.
It's a 30-minute drive from Patong and an easy half-day or evening trip. Try the kanom jeen (cold rice noodles) at one of the morning shops, take photos of the colourful façades, and stay for dinner at one of the open-air restaurants. A welcome reset from the beach scene.
